The Columbia Quadsquad is excited to announce a new partnership with Dr. Evan Ekman and his practice, Southern Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. As part of the partnership, Dr. Ekman has been appointed the league’s medical director, and will oversee the medical care of all skaters related to the sport of roller derby.

“We are blessed to have the support of Dr. Ekman and his staff,” said sponsorship chair Bruiser Barbie. “His knowledge and expertise will ensure that our league skaters are physically taken care of, not only in regard to injury treatment but injury prevention as well.”

Dr. Ekman is no stranger to treating athletes. His pros gallery includes NFL athletes Duce Staley, Mo Collins, and Richard Seymour. Locally, he served as the medical director of the Columbia Inferno hockey team from 2001 through 2008. Nationally he has participated in the athletic care of the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Kings and the Anaheim Mighty Ducks among many others. He was the resident team physician of the Wake Forest basketball team in 1995 and 1996. Internationally, he served as the medical director of the World Aerobic Championships in 1997 and 1998.

“We are proud to bring sustainable orthopaedic care to the Columbia Quad Squad,” said Dr. Evan Ekman. “Our goal is to be readily available to these athletes, and to give them the most comprehensive and world class care available. The Quadsquad represents premier roller derby on the rise, and we are excited to be a part of what they are doing.”

The Columbia Quad Squad is a regionally competitive league dedicated to advancing the sport of roller derby. Formed in 2007, and recently accepted into the Womens Flat Track Roller Derby (WFTDA) apprentice program, the league now boasts around 60 skaters, as well as numerous refs, trainers, coaches and volunteers. “I feel a great sense of ease knowing a doctor of his caliber has partnered with us,” said allstar Chuck-Town Bruiser. “Injuries happen, so to have Dr. Ekman in our arsenal gives me confidence as an athlete.”
